Bumper Bowling

Matthew 7:13-14
13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

It has been many years ago but I remember when the concept of “bumper” bowling first came about. At the time, and it may be different now, they placed very long inflated tubes in the gutters, running nearly the entire length of the lane, to help keep the ball from falling into them. The idea was for those less skilled to be able to knock over more pins and have more fun at the game.

Since the bumpers didn’t quite go all the way, then, from the very start to the very end of the gutter it was possible to still get the ball in “the channel” and score nothing on that roll. I’ve also seen people throw so wildly and so hard they got the ball stuck and even jumped the ball over the bumper and gutter into the other lane! So, these guides weren’t fool-proof, so to say.

God has a path for each of us, kind of like the bowling lane I spoke of above. Scripture refers to it as the straight and narrow way. In His Moral Law, often referred to as the Ten Commandments, He has given us a set of “bumpers for life”, too. These Laws are designed to keep us on the right path, His way. But like the bumpers in bowling we can run a foul of them if we aren’t striving to keep our lives on the path He set out for us. Similarly, these guides won’t get us all the way to the “score”, into Heaven. No amount of keeping any of God’s Laws will save us, only His grace by our faith in Jesus alone will get us to the ultimate goal: eternal life with our Lord.

Wrong Turn?

“We all want progress, but if you’re on the wrong road, progress means
doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road; in that case, the
man who turns back soonest is the most progressive.”
– C.S. Lewis

These words from Lewis went along with a lot of the lesson and preaching I heard today, at least in my mind. There are so many roads and intersections out there today. It can be easy to get guided in the wrong direction, take a wrong turn, or get completely off course. False teaching and heresies abound as much or more today than at any time in history. And we have so much “political correctness” being shoved at us in the name of tolerance that more and more folks are getting turned down the wrong road. It’s true there are many roads that lead to one destination. But all of those “broad” roads lead to hell, not to Paradise.

PC it isn’t but the truth is this: There is only one way and that is through Christ Jesus. And thank God we have a map to lead us along the road: the Bible.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
